Belize Christmas Bird Count

Bird watchersThe Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is an annual tradition where volunteers can help count early-winter birds. The CBC count period is December 14 through January 5. These counts are held all over the Americas and wherever species, which breed in the Americas, migrate. The first Christmas Bird Count was held in the USA in 1900.

Belize has established four count circles, each with a 15-mile diameter. Belize's first count circle was established in 1972. This was the Belize City count which centers near the village of Burell Boom. In 1975 the Belmopan circle was formed. Later the Gallon Jug (1991) and Punta Gorda (2000) were added to the already species-rich Belize Christmas Bird Count. A summary of the Belize Christmas Bird Count appears in the Belize Audubon Society Newsletter. Please contact Delia Noble for more details.
