Volunteering

As an individual or with a group, volunteer your time to assist in our work. We invite Belizeans or international volunteers to work with us – either in our offices or out at our protected areas.

Types of Volunteers:

Some volunteers are recruited by partner organizations, but the majority apply as individuals. Past volunteers have contributed by creating community education programmes, trail signs, brochures, management guidelines for protected areas and wardens, and analyzing the effectiveness of the gift shops . We are actively seeking committed volunteers to join us.

We also work with organized groups such as Trekforce, Gap Challenge and Raleigh International.

Qualifications:

Although we appreciate many peoples' desire to help, the volunteers that are most useful are those with knowledge, skills and experience. People who have worked in developing countries, community development, teachers, tourism development, artists, small business development, conservation or park management can provide valuable contribution.. For marine volunteers, we prefer those with dive qualifications, dive experience and marine research experience.

In order for the experience to be beneficial for both the volunteer and BAS, we require that overseas volunteers work for a minimum of 3 months (1 month for marine volunteers).

Costs:

Since BAS is mainly funded through grants, we cannot pay volunteers or provide accommodation. Due to the costs involved in maintaining our facilities at Half Moon Caye, our marine volunteers need to provide a accommodation and food fee of US $15 daily.

Internships

As part of your University course, you can complete an assessed project in one of our protected areas.
